There is a chance your family is
French, not Irish at all.
The Joseph Gogan from New Brunswick
was probably French Acadian. Gallant
is also French.
My own family was Acadian and
originally from New Brunswick. In fact,
my grandfather was a Joseph Gogan too--
that name seems to have run in the
family.

the "Gogan" side of the name originally
came to Ireland with the Normans in the
late 11th century. The fore father was
Baron Degogan who was Strongbow's right
hand man.
Over time the name changed in different
regions around Ireland as well to
Logan, Wogan etc.
I will soon have the bare bones of a
family tree dating back to the time of
Degogan and hope to have this online
(with full editing features) by the end
of March 2001.IP address Logged |
Posted By: tgogan | I will be looking forward to seeing that
info Alex, even if I am not an Irish
Gogan!
haha
Anyway, I still think it is an
interesting site for all us Gogan's no
matter what our origins.

Posted By: tgogan | okay, I have looked that up. He was
Milo deCogan, a Norman in the 1100s--
involved in the Anglo-Norman invasion
of approx. 1171 I think.
Interesting.

Posted By: AlexGogan | Well you are right, and I got the spelling right. I will have to chase up my
cousin this week to get the details. I now have most of the family tree (which
he did) and will look it up and post here. If you want to email me you can at
alex@gogan.com Cause it is going to take me awhile to get the tree fully
online.

Posted By: pamgogan | Hi everyone. Unfortunately I do not
know much about my father's side of the
family. Now to find out I could
possibly be French instead of Irish.
Wow. My father's name is Richard Orrin
Gogan. Date of birth: 18Feb49.
Birthplace: Mass. His father's name
was Richard Lewis Gogan. (not sure of
his date of birth) My father hasn't
seen him since he was 9yrs old.
Richard married Majorie Stanley and had
4 children: Beverly, my father, Robert,
Gary, and Patricia. I would love to
learn more about my heritage.

Posted By: TonyGogan | I live in New Brunswick, Canada - Here
is what I know about the family history
from an article in the 1984 Moncton
Times newspaper: Joseph Gueguen was
the first from the Gogan clan to arrive
in Canada. He was born in Finistere,
France on the Bay of Biscay. When he
was eleven was tutored by missionaries,
and trained for the priesthood but did
not become an official priest. When
crossing the Atlantic in the 1750's he
was shot in the right hand. He became
the founder of the village of Cocagne,
NB in 1767. He was a fur trader,
magistrate, biblical authority,
linguist, professional navigator and
justice of the piece and an unordained
priest. He had three wives, and twelve
children. He studied higher
mathematics, spoke French, Celtic,
English and MicMac Indian, and wrote
the first translation of MicMac to
English. He even chased American
Privateers during the American
Revolution. Cool guy. IP address Logged |
Posted By: TonyGogan | One more comment about the Joseph
Gueguen. He is known to be the
ancestor of the Gogans, Goguens,
Goggins and Gogains in eastern Canada
and throughout the USA. IP address Logged |
